Susan Foss is a writer, reader, and daydreamer, who grew up all over the world as a military brat. Past places of residence were: California; Illinois; Utah; Okinawa, Japan; New Jersey; Indiana; and Texas. Still a brat, she’s now settled in Arizona, where she’s drawing on her Mexican and Native American (Akimel O’otham) heritage to create new worlds in fantasy and sci-fi stories.
Susan first knew she wanted to become a writer at the tender age of five, when she chose between the other very viable career options of “singer” and “actress.” She finished her first official full-length novel draft in college at the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) while earning a Bachelor’s degree in English. While that poor NaNoWriMo draft will never again see the light of day, she continued to write manuscripts throughout grad school at Rice University, where she met her wonderful husband and earned her Master’s (also in English, of course).
After grad school, Susan continued to write fiction while working as a grant writer for Maricopa Community Colleges and starting a family. Nowadays, she only (only!) works on the latter, while pursuing publication. In 2022, she joined SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) where she serves as a regional E&I (Equity and Inclusion) co-lead. She is a registered member of the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). When she’s not writing, she can be found with her nose in a book, cooking, biking, or just hanging out with her husband Mike and their four amazing, rambunctious kids.
